Editorial draft available to read. Factual and language review is pending. Examples are illustrative.

Decision and scope

A useful user story identifies a person, a need and an observable result. Add acceptance conditions for data, permissions and failure states. Describing only the appearance of a screen leaves important business decisions unresolved and makes completion depend on whoever happens to review the feature that day.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example: a manager needs to approve expenses within her authority. A valid request records approval and the approved version. An amount above her limit requires a different approver. Editing the amount after approval returns the request to review. Each outcome can be checked without guessing what the developer intended.

Acceptance check

Review the story with the user and implementation team before work starts. Include an ordinary path and meaningful exceptions without dictating every technical detail. Accept the specification when two reviewers can independently decide whether the delivered behavior meets it.

Key takeaways

  • Accept the specification when two reviewers can independently decide whether the delivered behavior meets it.
